The Role of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Managing Facial Trauma

Posted on 7/15/2024 by Lehigh Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Woman freaking out at her old dentist before making an appointment at Lehigh Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Allentown, PAFacial trauma, whether resulting from accidents, assaults, sports injuries, or falls, can be both physically and psychologically devastating for patients. Additionally, facial trauma can cause disfigurement and permanent loss of functions like seeing, chewing, and swallowing if not properly handled. Oral and Maxillofacial (OMS) surgeons not only help to reduce the risks of complications but also restore form and function where they have been lost.

What to Expect from an Maxillofacial Surgeon in Facial Trauma Therapy

The specifics of treatment vary widely depending on the nature and severity of injuries. The treatment may include:

Initial Assessment

OMS surgeon will first examine your face to assess how badly you were injured. Depending on the severity of injuries, the assessment can be a standard physical examination of the wounds or involve X-rays, CT scans, and perhaps even an MRI. The scans are especially useful in assessing soft tissue injuries, structural abnormalities, and any underlying fractures.

Treatment Plan

Based on the assessment, the oral surgeon will develop an individualized treatment plan to correct any problems. They may also prescribe some pain medication to ensure your comfort through the treatment. A standard treatment for facial trauma involves procedures like fixing fractures and broken bones using plates, screws, or wires.

If you have pronounced scarring, the surgeon may perform soft tissue repair (suturing). In case of teeth loss or damage, dental repair procedures like root canals, crown placements, and dental implants may be necessary. Where the traumatic damage is severe enough to take away some functions like chewing or talking, your surgeon will recommend extensive surgery.

Notably, maxillofacial surgeries are usually complex and sometimes require collaboration between different specialists. For instance, depending on the nature of the trauma, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon may collaborate with plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, and ophthalmologists during treatment.
