Things We May Do to Prepare the Jaw for Dental ImplantsIn recent years, dental implant technology has advanced significantly. Nowadays, you can walk into our offices with a problematic tooth and walk out with a new one, all done within a few hours. However, getting dental implants isn't as straightforward as it sounds. There are several things we have to do to ensure that patients are safe to get implants.

For instance, before getting implants, your jaws must have enough supporting bone. Insufficient supporting bones could result in implant complications later on. This is why we perform procedures like gum grafting and root canals to get your jaw ready for implants. Here are a few of the things we have to do to prepare the jaw for dental implants.

Preparation for the Dental Procedure

Dental implants require a significant amount of bone stability, given that they are essentially tooth root replacements. From a professional point of view, dental implants should be surrounded by at least 2.0 millimeters of healthy bone. This is important because it supports the implant. However, you might not have enough healthy bone, especially if you have several missing teeth. There is a strong relationship between the jaw bone and your teeth. When you have a complete set of teeth, your jaw bone is healthy because it gets all the support and nutrients it needs from the teeth. However, when you have missing teeth, the opposite happens. As a result, you will not have enough bone tissues to support the implant.

To fix this problem, we perform a gum graft surgery that helps restore tissues. This is important because it helps stabilize the jaw. It is one of the common things we do to prepare jaws for dental implants. In some rare cases, we also perform root canal procedures to clean any infected tooth. Getting dental implants with infected tooth could result in oral conditions that could be severe. Contact us for more information on how we prepare your jaw for dental implants.
