Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)
Allentown, PA

A happy patient after an Otoplasty procedure at Lehigh Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Allentown, PAHere at Lehigh Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we want all of our patients to feel good about the way that they look. For those who struggle with protruding ears, self-consciousness can be a real issue. If you don't like the way your ears protrude, we can help with an otoplasty.

The Otoplasty Procedure

The procedure is intended to help alter the proportion, shape, and position of the ears. Ears may protrude due to genetics, trauma, or birth deformities, and otoplasties are a great way to alter their appearance to be much less prominent. This procedure can help both old and young alike. A few of the reasons one might undergo otoplasty surgery are:
•  To pin ears back
•  To normalize facial aesthetic and prevent teasing
•  To reshape ears that appear too large or prominent

Am I A Candidate For Ear Pinning Surgery?

Patients who come to us for ear pinning surgery usually do so because they have a problem with the way their ears look. Usually, they describe feeling as though their ears are too large, or they feel like their ears are too prominent in their silhouette. Many times these aesthetic issues are obvious even in very young children. A good candidate for otoplasty procedures is anyone who is unhappy with the aesthetic of their ears, who are also realistic about the possible outcomes of the procedure. We do our best to give you a good idea of how much we can alter your looks during any procedure.

What Will The Ear Pinning Procedure Be Like?

Most ear pinning procedures are performed as outpatient procedures at our office and can take a few hours to complete. Children who have the procedure done will usually be placed under general anesthesia, but adults often are given a local anesthetic. If you desire, general anesthesia is available.

What Should I Expect During Recovery Following Ear Pinning?

Following ear pinning procedures, you can return to work or school within four or five days following the procedure. Healing time is critical to the successful outcome of the procedure. Patients who undergo otoplasty procedure will have a bandage wrapped around their head to maintain the form and placement of the ears. The head should be kept elevated, we know that this is normal for the head, but it is worth mentioning!

Stitches that are placed during the surgery will be removed during a follow-up appointment roughly a week after the surgery. Bruising and swelling are to be expected following the surgery and can result in the loss of feeling in the ears, this is a temporary issue and will return to normal following a reduction in the swelling. Following any surgery, you should avoid strenuous activities that can significantly elevate your heart rate. Make sure to follow all post-op appointments and instructions to ensure the best possible results with the fewest complications.

Scars from the procedure will be most prominent immediately following the procedure and will soften over time. As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, the formation of scar tissue and the need for revision surgeries.
